1976 是 Paul Smith 的關鍵時刻，當年他的首個男裝系列就在巴黎時裝節中發表，當時根本沒有人會料到這位英國設計師日後的成就與身家，竟能超越當年正冒起的英國崩后始祖 Vivienne Westwood。

但當時他就被不少人質疑，那麼簡單的設計怎能在巴黎時裝界佔一席位，而日後事實 Paul Smith 就能証明給眾人知道，要然與別人妥協，他寧願不幹。他曾說︰「The hardest thing was justifying the name "Designer" for myself when I only made such simple clothes. I ended up designing clothes that I wanted to wear myself and felt good in，No-bullshit clothing」，正道出他對做設計師的堅持與原則，你可以說他一成不變，但他說給你知，Paul Smith 就是 Paul Smith。
